UK’s Gatwick Airport presently has 2,000 beacons for in-house navigation

Sophisticated in-house environments including air-ports and shopping malls could be a nightmare to find your way around. And even though Google is eyeing cell phones with 3D sensors as one potential solution for places GPS won’t accurately reach, another approach is to kit out an interior with many Bluetooth beacons – giving cell phone users located-locked pings to fix onto to grasp exactly where they are.

The UK’s 2nd busiest airport, Gatwick airport, has chosen the second method to power an indoor navigation system it’s launching as a section of a bigger, multi-year transformation program.

It’s finally finished kitting out its two terminals with close to 2,000 battery-powered beacons making sure that digital map users will get a more exact blue dot as they go around. The beacon system will also be used to power an augmented reality wayfinding tool – to make certain that mobile users will be able to be guided to a particular locations within the terminals through on-screen arrows. The beacon system is planned as backing up positioning with +/-3m precision.

Gatwick is looking to integrate indoor positioning into some of its applications, and says it’s in discussions with airlines to make use of it for their own applications and services – giving demonstration of them being able to send push notifications to notify people if they’re running late, or even make a decision on whether or not to wait or offload luggage so an airplane can take off on time.

Gatwick says it won’t be obtaining any personal data through the beacons but says “generic information on ‘people densities’ in different beacon zones” will be utilized to help improve airport operations – like queue measurement, streamlining passenger flows and minimizing congestion.

The airport has worked with UK start-up Pointr on the system. In addition to developing software and managing the system on an ongoing basis, Pointr provides an SDK with support for 3D AR wayfinding for third parties to get into functionality.
