UK’s Gatwick Airport presently has 2,000 beacons for indoor navigation

Sophisticated indoor environments like airports and departmental stores can be a bad dream to find your way around. And although Google is thinking of getting cell phones with 3D detectors as one potential fix for places GPS won’t correctly reach, another approach is to kit out an interior with a whole lot of Bluetooth beacons – giving cell phone users located-locked pings to fix onto to recognise exactly where they are.

The UK’s second busiest air-port, Gatwick, has selected the latter method to power an indoor navigation system it’s launching as an element of a wider, multi-year transformation program.

It’s now completed kitting out its two terminals with about 2,000 battery-powered beacons to make sure that digital map users will get a more exact blue dot as they go around. The beacon system will likewise be employed to power an augmented reality wayfinding tool – to ensure that mobile users can be guided to specific locations within the terminals through on-screen arrows. The beacon system is slated as supporting positioning with +/-3m accuracy.

Gatwick is planning to integrate indoor positioning into some of its applications, and says it’s in discussions with airlines to utilize it for their own applications and services – giving demonstration of them being able to send push notifications to advise passengers if they’re running late, or even settle on if they should wait or offload luggage so a plane can take off punctually.

Retail stores and other third parties will likewise be able to use the system for proximity detection of potential clients and delivery promotion messages – as a minimum to those who’ve opted in to receive them.

Gatwick says it will not be gathering any personal data with the beacons but says “generic information on ‘people densities’ in different beacon zones” will be employed to help improve airport operations – such as queue measurement, streamlining passenger flows and cutting down congestion.

The airport has worked with UK start-up Pointr on the system. Along with developing software and managing the system on an ongoing basis, Pointr provides an SDK with support for 3D AR wayfinding as a way for third parties to tap into the functionality.
